An introduction to the Accent Labs e-learning course

The Accent Labs course is an e-learning programme that is practical and outcomes based and enables learners to work at their own pace in their own time.

Purpose

The e-learning programme assists individuals to modify their speech so that their English pronunciation is more understandable by first language English speakers, whilst retaining their own culture, ethnicity and ties to their mother tongue.

The course equips learners with the necessary communication skills in English to conduct themselves professionally within the work environment.

Learning to speak intelligible English provides candidates with the self-confidence and assertiveness to communicate in a variety of settings.

The course provides learners with a better future in a world where English has become the most commonly used language in business

Style of Learning

For companies and tertiary institutions we recommend a blended approach consisting of:

E-learning
Planned and preferably unlimited access to the programme.

Tutorials
Weekly face-to-face facilitated sessions focusing on specific modules of the e-learning programme using a workbook/training manual and an internal or external training facilitator.

The workbook is intended to be used as support material for the tutorials and provides learners with the opportunity to practice and refine their skills outside of the facilitated sessions. Accent Labs can supply facilitators or alternatively run an on-site three day train-the-trainer course. We also offer assessments to assess the auditory discrimination and sound production of the learners.

Structure of Training

The format of providing training over a period of time is consistent with that of ‘spaced repetition’.

Studies indicate that exposure to new skills over a period of time results in better retention and application of those skills.

Accent  modification is all about changing habits, so with spaced repetition the old habits of speaking are gradually replaced by the new production of speech sounds.
